At the age of 22 trained as a pilot for the RAF in Canada
He later rose to the rank of Flight Lieutenant, flying Spitfires in WWII
First Jamaican athlete to win a gold medal at the Olympics in 1948
Graduated as a doctor in 1953
Awarded an MBE by the Queen in 1954 and Jamaican Order of Distinction in 1973
